30 Days of Biking, Day 7
“I’m cold,” grumbled Mr. Spoked. We were sitting in the car with the bikes still on the rack, waiting to lead a 30-mile group ride for which no one had shown up. It was raining, a true Midwestern spring thunderstorm complete with crashing lightning.
Eventually, the rain began to slow down. “It looks like it’s clearing in the west,” I said hopefully (it wasn’t). Meanwhile the temperature was stuck at 52°F. “We’ve ridden in worse conditions,” I reminded my husband. That lead us to reminiscence about cold, wet bike rides from the past, including one miserable time in Wisconsin when we huddled around a hot chocolate machine at a gas station–in July. The stories made us feel colder. “The hell with it,” Mr. Spoked said. “Let’s go grab some breakfast and head home. You can ride later.”
The box with the Hokey Spokes blinkies arrived yesterday, and I installed one on each of our bikes. Tonight we took them for a test ride to a local frozen custard shop, and on the way home Mr. Spoked shot this video of me riding in circles so you could see how they work. They’re a bit pricey, but we both liked the changing patterns and the fact that they’re visible even at twilight.
