For those of you who believe Kansas is uninteresting territory for bicycling, consider our skies.  This morning’s sunrise was breathtaking, as good as any ocean view or mountain vista.  I stopped three times on the commute to admire it.  People whizzing past in cars caught only a glimpse in the rear view mirror, if they saw it at all.

The beautiful sunrise reminded me of this quick little stanza about Kansas.  It sums up everything that’s good about a bike ride in this part of the world.

Prairie-land is golden,
Airy, wide;
The sky our only mountain;
We, inside.
–May Williams Ward, “Sky-Mountain” (1927)

Here’s to riding inside mountains.
